From today’s watercolor sketch class. Process:  we did a color impression (below left, then began again with a sketch in hard (HB) pencil and added watercolor to that watercolor.

These demo sketches were made on mixed media paper.

These doves were feeding the other day (like everyday) in our yard. As I was drawing them, I was thinking about a book chapter I am working about drawing animals. When I draw these, here is what I am thinking: keep the pen loose in your hand and let your hand follow the way the creature seems to be moving. Find some shapes and see how they connect.. what is the spine doing…focus on the experience of observing the creature, not the drawing. Also, let the pen do its work.  The pen and brush are in service to the experience and the mind.
